Ship was fully loaded, Algeria to Wilhelmshaven with 72,000 tons. While off Dutch coast a noise was heard on deck. Big hull crack on port side. With bad weather coming on, the port of Ijmuiden allowed the ship in so it could be lightered, averting a very big spill.

The three wings are the normal position of the midships segregated ballast tanks. Colocotronis was a very poor owner. His ships were involved in at least four major casualties before he went broke in the late seventies (19750513, 19730318, 19680307). At this point guessing, segregated ballast tank corrosion. If we have a big hull crack in 3P and only a 2000T spill, 3P must have been a segregated ballast tank but we could use confirmation. Also like to know if it was coated/uncoated.

Ijmuiden reacted intelligently. This was an Erika/Prestige or worse in the making. Post-Amoco Cadiz, it almost certainly would have been a very major spill in a very sensitive area.
