While on a voyage from Nigeria to New York, loaded with crude,
the Liberian steam tanker Spartan Lady broke in two
during hurricane force winds about 165 miles SE of New York
in lat 39.02N, long 71.00W on April 4, 1975.
Once crew membered died.
Both sections of the tanker drifted,
with the afterpart sinking April 6-7,
and the bow section being sunk by the USCG on April 7.
The 36 surviving crew were all safely picked up by helicopters.
