While on a voyage from Nigeria to New York, loaded with crude, the Liberian steam tanker Spartan Lady broke in two during hurricane force winds about 165 miles SE of New York in lat 39.02N, long 71.00W on April 4, 1975. Once crew membered died. Both sections of the tanker drifted, with the afterpart sinking April 6-7, and the bow section being sunk by the USCG on April 7. The 36 surviving crew were all safely picked up by helicopters.

USCG source says The tanker Spartan Lady had been severed during hurricane force storm, 145 miles South of Marthas Vinyard Says USCG rescued all crew members.

MIT79 says structural failure. Need more info.
