TT Juliana, loaded with 18,298 tons of Kuwaiti crude anchored off Niigata during the morning of 1971-11-30. Some nine hours later, while waiting pilot in very rough weather, she dragged her anchor and hit the breakwater. She immediately broke in two, both parts grounding on the tetrapods. Six tanks ruptured. All 47 on board rescued. It was estimated that about 4000 tons escaped in the next 24 houts. Salvors managed to pump out the remaining cargo from the intact tanks before they too began leaking.

Anchor dragging is not a very good initial cause.
