On November 15, 1971, while the Spanish motor tanker Elcano
was on a ballast voyage from Tenerife to Ras Tanura,
a violent explosion occurred in empty No 1 tank
during cleaning operations when about 40 miles off Dakar,
as a consequence of which she capsized.
Four crewmen died as a result.
The remaining 35 were safely rescued by the Spanish motor vessel Ragar,
which took them to Dakar.
The Elcano subsequently sank in lat 13.43N,
long 18.38W, two days later.
