The Liberian motor ore carrier Banaluna with a crew of 35 sailed from the Philippine port of Tolosa on November 9, 1971 bound for Kokura with a cargo of 20,846 tons of magnetite iron concentrate. Two days later the Japanese master gave his ETA at Tobata as november 15. The last that was ever heard from the vessel was aradio message received by the charterers on Nov 12 when the master reported his position to be lat 19.24N, long 127.24 (which is NE of Luzon), speed 7 knots. When no further news was received, it was feared that the Banaluna had been overwhelmed by typhoon Irma which at the time of the last report was some 300 miles east of the vessel. No trace of the vessel was ever found.
