On December 13, 1968, the oil tanker Witwater broke up in heavy seas off the Atlantic coast of Panama, The break up of the vessel and continued leaking of the wreck spilled 14,000 barrels of bunker C and diesel oil into the water 5 miles for Galeta Island. The oil eventually impacted Galeta Island. Keyword: Fire.

The ship was a small 5,572 dwt tanker, ex Esso.

Some sources make it sound like the ship stranded first and then broke up, but they too are either ambiguous or clearly derivative.

At this point, we simply don't know which came first. Nor do we know why the USCG said fire was a key word.
