The 30 year old Turkish motor tanker Barbaros
was severely damaged by an explosion and fire
while anchored at a refinery pier in Izmit Bay,
Sea of Marmara, Turkey
during the afternoon of September 23, 1965.
resulting in the deaths of 15 personnel
from the 41 on board.
Ablaze from stem to stern,
smoke billowed hundreds of feet above the port.
The Barbaros had just completed discharging a cargo of petrol
and was about to sail when the explosion occured.
After the fire had been finally extinguished,
she was towed to anchor off Yarimca for safety reasons,
then subsequently to Buyukdere.
Declared a constructive total loss,
she was sold to local shipbreakers for scrap.
