Turbo-electric T2 was loaded with No 6 oil, Houston to Perth Amboy. On October 1, 1961 about 1948, big overspeed of the main propulsion generator. Ship was about 30.42N, 7930W. Generator flew apart, holed condenser. Ship either failed to close all the sea valves, or one of the valves failed. Engine room flooded and ship sank next day No one killed, but one crew seriously hurt,

On Oct 1st 1961, the American tanker Hess Mariner was about 110 miles E of Jacksonville on a voyage from Houston to Perth Amboy carrying oil in barrels [not true], when there was an explosion in the engine room [misleading]. The ship was holed, broke in two [dont think so], and sank.
